I'd like to show you how I think about building guitar sounds for any scenario. The question that arises is: What sounds do I need to sound like me and comfortably get through the gig/session?

In this folder, you can see that I've made three presets that are essentially the same. MAIN SOUNDS DIR covers my favourite effects. The signal chain is as follows:

  • FUZZ: with a little bit of an octave up effect to channel my inner Jimi. This is set to Footswitch 1.

  • OVERDRIVE: A pretty clean TubeScreamer style pedal to boost anything that might need a boost or to add some mid to the fuzz, as I often stack my drive pedals. This is set to Footswitch 2.

  • AMP Litigator: A Dumble Style preset I made that is set to have a lot of body, but retains clarity and cleanliness.

  • CAB: 2x12 Matchless H30 Cab, with some mic changes.

  • STEREO DELAY: Crisscross, to create a wider sound

  • REVERSE DELAY: One of my favourites - again Jimi Hendrix inspired - effects. I have attached this to a momentary (non latching) switch (Footswitch 3) to quickly get it in and out of a phrase. It is always on, but Footswitch 3 changes the mix level of this delay from 11% to 100% to get the full reversal of your lines.

  • REVERB: Because everyone needs reverb.

  • TAPE REEL: This is the secret sauce. It creates movement and some imperfections, to give it a more analog, less digital sound. This is set to Footswitch 4, but essentially stays on all the time.

In MAIN SOUNDS REC, you can see I have a direct signal that is completely dry and goes to the left output. Some producers like this so they can use the direct signal to create their own sounds. On the right I have my favourite effects again, exactly the same as the previous MAIN SOUND DIR, except the reverb and crisscross delay are turned off. THIS IS THE WINNING TICKET FOR ANY SESSION.

MAIN SOUND AB is my favourite way of performing live, where the left output bypasses any amp and cab simulation and goes directly to my amp and the right output goes to Front Of House (FOH) with all the amp and cab simulation on. This is how you become a soundperson's best friend haha.

My other sounds are often derived from the same idea, with certain things swapped in and out.

DIR LOOP HALO: It is super handy and can be very inspiring to have a looper available while writing/producing. I've taken out the Fuzz in this preset and put a looper at the end of the signal chain.

BOY SODA DIR is the preset I will be using live for the gig on the 30th of May. I need an envelope filter, which has taken away the reverse delay.

Try these sounds out for yourself or upload them into Helix Native whenever you have a guitarist in your studio.
